Why do most people not make progress in their finances?
They don’t have a strong enough “why”.
Why do you want to work on your finances?
I would bet that your why is deeper than just getting out of debt, or saving money. I bet you are tired of feeling stressed, anxious, out of control or frustrated with your finances.
For me there was a time that my husband and I used a credit card for everything. If we were out and saw something we liked, we would just buy it, swipe the credit card. If I went to the grocery store, swipe, gas station, swipe, a trip to TJ Maxx, buy things I didn’t really need, swipe. You get the idea.
Then once the bill came, I would notice my anxiety level would go up, I would cringe at having to open the bill in fear, having the thought, “how bad is it going to be?” Issue was, I then had to figure out where the money was going to come from to pay for it. We always paid the bill in full each month, but it was still a matter of where is the money to do that. It was so STRESSFUL.
Ask yourself:
- Do I want to be free from the stress of opening the bill, whether it is the credit card statement, student loan, auto loan, or whatever the bill may be?
- Do I want to start my own business and leave my job that makes you miserable?
- Do I want to be able to sleep at night and not worry about my finances?
What does it take to change my finances?
There is no on-size-fits all approach. Each of us are different and each of us have different upbringings, back grounds, and beliefs when it comes to money. We must discover our own personal why.
What are things I can do now to start working on my finances?
- Money Relationship
What is my relationship to money? It is important to understand what our mindset and beliefs are around money. Once we understand this about ourselves, we can work on the thoughts and beliefs that we have. We can decide which ones are holding us back from our financial goals and we can rewrite those thoughts. We can also decide to just let them go.
Then we can decide what thoughts we want to think about money that will move us in the direction we want to go. What beliefs and thoughts would serve us when it comes to money and managing our money and spending habits?
- Plan Carefully
It is important to plan how you will use your money. Decide what you need to buy and how much you can afford to spend. What are necessities and what are wants? Just because you have money to buy something doesn’t mean you should. It is important to build up savings for unexpected expenses. Avoid debt whenever possible and only spend money you actually have.
- At the end of the month, if you have money left, decide what you are going to do with it. Putting it into a savings account and building continuing to add extra to your emergency fund is always a good idea.
- If you have a deficit, make sure you review your spending, and expenses and make plans to reduce your expenses so you don’t run into this time and time again, causing you to get farther behind. Try this: Maybe instead of going out to eat you could prepare a meal at home. Instead of getting that coffee on the way to work, brew a pot of coffee and take a cup to go with you.
- Realistic and Honest
Know how much money you have coming in each month. Know where your money is going. Be honest with yourself on how much you are making verse how much you are spending. If you share financial responsibilities with a mate or partner, it is important to work on this together and be open and honest with each other. Consult one another when making financial decisions, keeping communication open.
- Awareness and adjusting
Having awareness of our beliefs, deciding if they are moving us towards our goals or not and then shifting our mindset gives us true freedom and emotional relief. I have personally experienced this in my life. As a business owner there are ups and downs at times in income.
When you have your finances in order it takes the stress and anxiety out of the equation when work slows down, for example. Instead of having panic, stress, and anxiety over how you are going to manage the bills, and expenses of day-to-day life, you can have calm, because you have a plan in place.
