I have heard it so many times over. People say “self-care is so selfish.” Is it really?
Self-care is one of the most unselfish things you can do. Why?
Think about this for a moment, if you don’t take care of yourself, how can you help someone else? You can’t, but in turn you become dependent on someone else. You can’t care for yourself or even help anyone else.
I love the example Kathryn Kos used in her book Forties On Fire when it comes to self-care. Here is the example she used:
“When you’re on an airplane and the oxygen mask falls, the stewardess warns you to put your mask on first THEN your child’s mask. Why? Because you cannot help others if you are helpless. Oftentimes we feel guilty when we take care of ourselves or put ourselves on the front burner. However, if you are healthy, vibrant and happy, you will be a happier parent, a more invested partner, a better friend to those around you.” — Kathryn Kos
If we don’t put our oxygen mask on first, or take care of ourselves, we ultimately becoming helpless to others. We eventually become the one that needs the help, instead.
What are you doing for yourself? What does self-care look like for you?
As we age, it is important to take care of ourselves in order to keep showing up and being the best next version of ourselves. To take care of your own needs and not sacrificing your well-being to please others. It means finding yourself worthy and not settling for less than you deserve.
Don’t wait to take control of your health. Learn to improve your mental and emotional health. See how the mindset work is one very important aspect of self-care.
“Don’t wait until everything is right. It will Never Be Perfect. There will always be challenges, and less than perfect conditions. So what? Get started now. With each step you take, you will grow stronger and stronger. You’ll be more and more skilled, more and more self-confident, and more and more successful.” — Po Bronson
It is never too late to work on yourself. The best time to start is NOW.
